Streetcar Racing Series

Under the Auspices of the Algoa Motorsport Club (AMSC)

Definition:
An entry level circuit racing category for licensed and roadworthy motor vehicles, geared towards encouraging new entries into the different categories of EC Motorsport.

Purpose:
To provide a genuine experience to new drivers who wish to sample circuit racing, but do not yet have a race car, knowledge or seat time.
Format; Streetcar racing series will be open to cars that are used as a daily driver but raced on the weekend. Since there are so many possible variants, it is suggested that the series be based on the following;

1. Classes. Initially classes are suggested as being open class (high power turbo and large displacement cars), 4 Cylinder class, Bakkie class and Classic class. As the field diversifies and grows.

2. Index of Performance. Running a total index of performance provides a platform for less powerful cars to take advantage of a handicap and index of performance, and still win the event. Everyone stands a chance.

3. Race Criteria. For now, warm-up and qualifying will be identical to other series. Thereafter there will be 2 x5 lap heats with a possible addition of a 5 lap sprint race, should it be feasible and economical to do so. Since the series is based on economy of cost, and the cars primarily have running gear that is biased towards road usage, it will avert problems such as overheated brakes and power plants.
This was tested in the last regional meeting sans a sprint race option and worked extremely well. Drivers are released from the line one by one based on their qualifying times, or last heat.

Conditions of Entry and Competing:

VEHICLES:

This series is not open to dedicated race cars.

The car must be road legal, licensed and in daily use.

Tyres must be commercially available, DOT approved road tyres. No Slicks or competition semi-slicks permitted.

Roll cages may be fitted (removable type or permanent) provided that if they are not removable types that they are acceptable and legal for daily usage.

Harnesses are optional, but as used, must meet the necessary criteria for mounting and safety as outlined by MSA.

Drivers who do not have any form of roll cage or harnesses will be required to sign indemnities for both items before they will be allowed to pass through scrutineering.

Any vehicle that is intended for use in Streetcar Series must first be inspected for compliance prior to entering any event promoted by the organisers. No race day compliance inspections will be accepted for first time runners.

COMPETITORS:

Competitors need to have spent some time under supervision to establish their knowledge of the race circuit, etiquette and knowledge of regulations, and an understanding of safety and self control under race conditions. This will be established by the drivers representative, who will review drivers and assist them where necessary.

Streetcar is an invitational series, it is not open to random entries. This is not to make an 'exclusive club' of the series, but instead allows the organisers to ensure that safety, an understanding of race craft and responsible racing ensures enjoyment for all competitors.

It is suggested that any driver wishing to enter into the series must have attended a Gymkhana Track Day, and satisfied the drivers representative that he/she is reasonably competent in lapping the circuit safely.

It is apparent that one of the risks inherent in introducing 'green' drivers to the category, is their lack of knowledge of flags, circuit rules and the racing line. Besides being obliged to peruse the white book and GCR content provided at the time of the license, it is important that the cognisance of the driver is checked for knowledge about the essentials.

Since naturally there will be speed differentials and overtaking during the course of a race, it is to be impressed on drivers that slower cars have the right to the racing line. The onus is on the faster driver to safely overtake either in an area without a solid line, or on the straight or when safe to do so. 'Red Mist' driving and inconsiderate track etiquette is to be addressed in a separate drivers briefing for Streetcar entrants before the start of the race day.
